Different rules for different people?

August 23, 2009

A common practice is not to publish that someone “took their own life”, rather using phrases like “No other people sought” or “No suspicious circumstances”.

This article, about a reality tv star who is thought to have been on the run after killing his wife, says:

It appears the reality TV star “took his own life,” RCMP Sgt Duncan Pound, spokesman for the RCMP’s federal border integrity programme said.

“At this present time the investigation into the circumstances of his death is continuing, but preliminary evidence suggests that he took his own life. Any further details will not be released at this time as this investigation remains in its infancy.”

Although it is a direct quote from an officer involved, cause of death still has not been confirmed. I am aware this is not a NZ article, but it still made me think- are there different rules for what is reported when it comes to the death of celebrities and criminals?
